For a second year Saddleworth Clarion and Manchester CTC have teamed up to run the Beard Cup Hill Climb. This year the event will follow on from the Snake Pass Hill Climb, a CTT event that runs out of Glossop, so why not enter both events on the same day? It will also be the National Clarion Hill Climb for 2024.

The hill climb is approximately 1.7km long on Huddersfield Road in Diggle village. It starts just after the crossroads of Carr Lane and Harrop Green Lane and ends approximatley 200 metres before the junction with A62. See the map on the right, or click here for the course route.

The event is also a social event as we celebrate everyone's achievements with a pie afterwards.

All riders will also walk away with an excusive badge to show that they completed the hill climb. Although this event is not the usual fare for audax riders, Peak Audax have supported the event in good numbers with some of them achieving prizes for their efforts.

The event has been generously sponsored by Grasscroft Property for the following cash prizes

Overall fastest Rider Cash prize of £30
Women First: £30 * Second: £20
Men - Women First: £30 * Second: £20
Tourist # First Man: £20 * First Woman: £20 *
First under 18 Girl £10 * Boy: £10 *
Teams In addition to individual prizes, the club with the 3 fastest riders can win the prestigious Beard Cup for the year. To encourage inclusivity teams must have both men and women in them. The time of the three fastest riders in a club is added up to find the winners either 2 women & 1 man or vice versa.

Rider Safety Information for Beard Cup Team and Individual Hill Climb - Sept 2024

o Riders must stick to their ride time or they may forfeit their entry. Ensure you are queueing up on the road a few minutes before your start time to ensure the timekeepers can complete their job.

o The course contains some potholes on the way up especially near the top of the hill. Riders should remain vigilant.

o Riders should take care when descending back down to the band club; the road surface on the descent has an uneven surface for a considerable distance.

o Please be aware this is a public highway with roads and entrances joining it - remain vigilant.

o There will be a photographer at an appropriate place on the course - photographs will be shared with all participants; these may later be used by the ride organisers for publicity/promotion. Anyone wishing not to having photographs of themselves shared must let the control know and who they are and their rider number.

o Under 18 riders must wear a helmet.

o All under 18 riders must have a signed parental consent form completed before receiving their race numbers (also available to complete in paper format at the start line)

o All riders under the age of 13 will need the photo permission form signed by a parent prior to the ride.

o Riders under 13 must be accompanied by an adult during the hill climb.
